More than half of Indiana's border is water which includes 400 miles of direct access to two major freight transportation arteries.  Terre Haute is equal distance (approximately 120 miles) to all three Indiana Ports.  The Portage of Burns Harbor handles international ships via the St. Lawrence Seaway connecting the Great Lakes to the Atlantics Ocean, and provides year-round barge access to more than 20 states and the Gulf of Mexico through the Inland Waterways System.  The Portage of Jeffersonville is a gateway to the Midwest providing year-round barge connections to the Gulf of Mexico through the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, and gives access to U.S. Markets within a day's drive.  The Portage of Mount Vernon is located on the Ohio River and has connections to five Class I railroads.
