Overview

Access to labor is one of the top criteria in the selection of a site for any business. Once a decision has been made to locate or expand in Terre Haute/Vigo County, the effects of making the right decision can be profound. Not only does Terre Haute draw from a two-state labor pool, employment ranges across the spectrum of industries.  Employment is relatively balanced among industries given the Terre Haute workforce breadth is both skills and experience.  We are known for high productivity, a strong work ethic and a sense of community.

Terre Haute offers a workforce at wage rates that are lower than most other parts of the country.  The region is home to a host of world-class higher education institutions - Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology,  Indiana State University, Ivy Tech Community College-Wabash Valley, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, and Harrison College.  These higher education institutions along with our public school system, the Vigo County School Corporation (which is ranked among the best within Indiana's 92-counties), provide the means to increase well trained and productive workforce, keeping up with product cycles and working to pull ahead of national and global competitors.

Over the past three decades, the presence of companies like Sony DADC (Blu-Ray DVD's and other media), Staples (the company's Midwest Distribution Center), GE Aviation, Bemis (one of the world's largest polyethylene plastic and flexographic printing facilities), Tredegar, PolyOne, Applied Extrusion Technologies, Companhia Siderurgica Nacional (South America's largest steel producer), Boral Bricks, CertainTeed, and Clabber Girl Corporation have helped Terre Haute earn the title Crossroads of America.
