For Immediate Release:
Cinergy/PSI
Awards $10,000 to the
Terre Haute Economic Development Corporation
Terre Haute, IN—The Cinergy/PSI Community Growth Partnership
Grant Program has awarded a $ 10,000 grant to the Terre Haute Economic
Development Corporation. The grant will help fund a master plan
study regarding a proposed I-70 interchange at Tabertown Road, including
potential development sites. Vigo County is providing $ 15,000 as
local matching funds. The total cost of the study project is $ 25,000.
Steve Witt, President of the Terre Haute Economic Development Corporation
says, “A new interchange at I-70 and Tabertown Road could
be of huge economic benefit along the I-70 corridor at the Vigo/Clay
County line.” Witt continues, “The Town of Seelyville
in eastern Vigo County, the Terre Haute International Airport as
well as for other property and semi-rural areas in both Vigo and
Clay Counties would see additional economic growth.”
With an eye on the future, Vigo County and the Terre Haute Economic
Development Corporation officials believe that the time has come
to plan for the County’s next major industrial facility. The
master plan study will define parts including: (a) the area in greater
detail; (b) identify existing conditions of the study area; (c)
identify location of utilities and nearby land uses and (d) provide
cost estimates for development of the study area.
“New development in this eastern Vigo/western Clay County
would benefit both counties by increasing employment opportunities
and increasing the tax base,” says Paul Mason, President of
the Vigo County Commissioners. “This study will be a first
step in identifying the feasibility of redeveloping the area in
and around the former Chinook mining facility. A Tabertown Road
interchange would, in our opinion, be of great economic benefit
to both Vigo and Clay Counties as well as to Cinergy/PSI.”
“These Grants often lead to additional millions of dollars
in private development and redevelopment investment, resulting in
jobs, a cleaner environment and improved livability in metropolitan
and rural areas,” says Rick Burger, Cinergy/PSI’s area
customer relations manager.
Vigo County Council President, Bob Hellman, notes, “Cinergy/PSI
is a fine example of how a company assists with economic development.
Their long standing effort, this $10,000 grant being one of them,
demonstrates commitment to continue economic development with Terre
Haute’s community.”
The grant is from the Cinergy/PSI Community Growth Partnership Program
aimed at generating new jobs and capitol investment in Indiana.
Seven grant recipients—all local or regional economic development
organizations—received $ 10,000 each toward economic development
projects. Cinergy/PSI required grant recipients to demonstrate that
they have leveraged other resources or partners in addition to Cinergy/PSI
for their projects. The funding for the Community Growth Partnership
Grant Program is provided by Cinergy Foundation.
Cinergy/PSI is Indiana’s largest electric supplier, serving
more than 750,000 customers in portions of 69 of Indiana’s
92 counties. Historically, Cinergy has made a strong commitment
to economic development throughout its service territory.
The THEDC works collaboratively with elected officials and community
partners to leverage our area’s economic development efforts.
The development of the THEDC as the lead economic development corporation
is a direct result of the long range planning strategy of Terre
Haute Tomorrow.
