TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (November 1, 2006) - Boral Bricks, the nation’s largest brick manufacturer and distributor of masonry products, held a ceremonial groundbreaking for its newest manufacturing plant in Terre Haute, Ind., on Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at 11:00 a.m.
The ceremony was hosted by the Terre Haute Economic Development Corporation and attended by many local and state officials. “Our community is gaining a strong community partner in Boral Bricks, helping further our economic growth,” said Steve Witt, president of the Terre Haute Economic Development Corporation.
When completed, the 275,000 square foot facility will produce enough brick to build approximately 6,000 all-brick homes a year. There will be approximately 50 fulltime employees managing the day-to-day aspects of the facility and several outsourced contractors to handle the trucking needs of raw materials and deliveries on a daily basis.
The plant will also feature a cutting-edge technology to handle its energy needs: landfill gas. Republic Services, owners of the nearby “Victory” landfill has contracted with Boral Bricks to provide the infrastructure needed to pipeline the methane gas produced from the landfill for use as an energy source for plant operations. “Our services will allow Boral Bricks to cut down on energy costs in the long run, invest in the community’s well-being and place it as one of the cutting edge energy-conscience companies in the country,” said William Flower, VP communications, Republic Services.
“We feel this state-of-the-art facility will not only better position us to handle the strong housing market throughout this region, but it also showcases our commitment to the environment,” said Bob Kepford, president of Boral Bricks.
