Terre Haute EDC March Board Meeting News

After a national presidential search, Dr. King was appointed the 16th president of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in February 2011. Her responsibilities include advancing the mission of the College by promoting excellence in teaching and scholarship, providing leadership for academic departments, interdisciplinary programs in curricular, and personnel and budgetary matters. Dr. King began her service at The Woods in 2002 as assistant professor of mathematics. Since then she has held numerous leadership positions at the College including chair of the sciences and mathematics department, assistant dean for undergraduate and international programs, vice president for academic affairs and interim president. Prior to her joining Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, Dr. King served as an instructor of mathematics at Indiana State University from 1985 to 2002.

Dr. King stated Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College has a local economic impact of $29.4 million. She mentioned that The Woods is one of thirty-one private colleges and universities across the state that makes up the Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI). Dr. King went on to say that students at an ICI college are twice as likely to graduate in four years than those at a public institution, this according to Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). Dr. King added, “This means Saint Mary-of-the-Woods graduates contribute to their communities sooner-paying taxes, buying homes and earning and spending income”.

Dr. King is the recipient of the Sister Mary Joseph Pomeroy Award for Faculty Excellence, the College’s highest teaching honor, and has also been awarded for service. She studied at Indiana State University, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instructional/educational leadership. Dr. King has delivered numerous professional presentations and published research on factors that encourage women to persist in their study of mathematics.

Currently, Dr. King is an active member of the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce, the United Way of the Wabash Valley, Women of Influence and her church.
